Safe, efficient tree removal

There are several reasons for removing trees around your property.
One can be to let more light into your yard in an effort to encourage grass and gardens to grow more effectively. Evaluating your tree species and selectively removing trees can make a big difference in the maintenance and beauty of your yard.
Another reason can be to let more light to your house. Some sunlight every day is necessary to help dry out rain and dew on your house.  A house getting adequate light can greatly reduce mildew and rot.

Safety is the most important reason for removal. There are four different things Dan will consider when evaluating the safety of the trees around your property. First, is the reach of the tree, whether it is a tree in your yard or even your neighbor’s yard.  Second, is the species of the tree. Some are notoriously bad for blowing over while other trees tend to be quite stable. Third is the health of the tree. With his trained eye, Dan can evaluate some symptoms that may be storm or general health related with your tree, such as rot, mold or insect infestation. Finally, another consideration is the potential of a tree. How large is that tree and what potential damage could it do to your home? Is the risk worth the reward? An expert evaluation from Dan’s Tree Service can help you answer those questions.

Expert pruning for healthy growth

Tree pruning and crown reduction can accomplish several things, such as letting light into your yard and home or providing protection for buildings/structures on your property. Allowing light access to both your yard and home is advantageous for lawn maintenance and reducing moisture issues in your home. Pruning trees also decreases the likelihood that a tree will damage your home. Crown reduction is the expert, alternate thinning of the branches in your tree canopy.  Done correctly, this method maintains the health of your trees. Another method to be avoided is topping trees. Topping is like giving your trees a crew cut and can be very detrimental; causing rot, structural weakening and even killing the tree.

Crown reduction done properly opens the tree canopy, allowing more wind to pass through it and reducing the risk of breaking or worse blowing over. This is akin to taking the sail off a sailing mast, decreasing register with the wind. Pruning also adds aesthetic value to your home. Shaping trees and raising canopies can improve curb appeal increasing your home value.  Pruning your trees has multiple benefits including protection, maintenance, and the beauty of your property.

Stump grinding for a clean yard

There are several ways to remove stumps in your yard.

One could be completely excavating the stump with a heavy piece of equipment. This is not advantageous because it leaves a hole in your yard which needs to be filled. The weight of the equipment, when accessing the stump, can do damage to your yard or driveway. Stumps are also costly to dispose of in tree processing facilities.  Removal of stumps can have hidden costs when factoring in total cost.

Another application is to allow the stump to rot in place.  This can be unsightly and can take a number of years to decay.  Sometimes hikes will develop where stumps decay creating a liability.  Some homeowner associations require stumps be ground and don’t allow homeowners leave them to decay.

The preferred way to deal with a stump is stump grinding. This method involves using a machine with a carbide-toothed wheel that grinds the stump into mulch in place. When a stump is ground correctly all of the roots and core of the stump are ground and turned into a soft mulch which can be recycled and spread around your yard as garden cover. This is the same pretty material offered at your local hardware store, but without the colored brown dye.

Another stump grinding option is to have the tops of your stumps ground off just below grade and to let the remains of the stumps decay. Some less than honest tree workers will take this approach and charge for a full grinding. Significant collapsing and an inability to dig or plant can be the result.  In wooded areas this might not matter, but the price should be less.
Depending on the location, Dan’s Tree Service will recommend the most effective method for your stumps.

Precision Crane-Assisted Tree Removal

The use of a crane is tremendously helpful in a number of different applications. The most common is the removal of trees from houses following a storm.  By vertically lifting all the tree weight, a crane removal can mitigate additional structural damage while removing the tree. A crane takes the tremendous weight of the tree, lifts it, sweeping it away from the houseand gently puts it safely on the ground. Dan’s highly trained arborists and skilled certified crane operators will develop a plan to pick and remove a tree from your home safely while also reducing the potential for additional damage to your home.

Cranes are also valuable in reducing the chance of damage to your yard or driveway. Customers with particularly large tree removals near structures, driveways, and over highly manicured lawns, will benefit tremendously.  By having the tree picked up, raised, and set down on the road for processing, the potential for damage to yards or driveways can be avoided.
Dan’s Tree Service’s a 30-ton crane with a reach of 105 feet can do this work exceptionally well for you.

Emergency Tree Services to Protect Your Home

Prior to a storm, prevention is the best way to avoid emergency tree work. Having a total tree evaluation of your yard can provide you with valuable information to avoid the potential for emergency work. Dan’s Tree Service can pick out those trees that present the greatest risk, provide options for removal, and recommend pruning which can reduce your risk of trees falling on your home or property.

In an emergency, removing a tree from your home or yard can be dangerous. Due to the extreme loaded limb pressures and easily shifting tree weights, emergency work should be done by a professional. Dan’s Tree Service with its crane and its highly skilled arborists is able to do this exceptional dangerous work safely for you.

Call when you have an emergency and Dan’s Tree Service will mobilize quickly to get the tree removed and get your home and property moving towards full restoration.

Expert Tree Preservation Through Proper Evaluation

Some trees provide intrinsic value to the home and extra effort can be made to protect and save these trees. Healthy trees may need some thinning. Oak trees in particular in the Tidewater area are wonderful trees, but their canopies can be so large that they are prone to blowing over. Thinning or crown reduction can open them up and protect them from risk.

Storm damaged trees can leave some large scars and pruning will help clean up these wounds. Over time healing will be accelerated reducing the chance of infestation from insects or rot which can kill your tree. Storms may also leave hanging branches (widow makers) causing safety issues.  A complete tree assessment after a storm by professionals at Dan’s Tree Service can help protect you.

Some trees are better at avoiding rot and decay than others. White oaks for instance have a lot of tannic acid in the wood and can survive larger injuries in a windstorm. Other trees like poplars tend to decay quickly and don’t have those inherent characteristics that keep them from rotting.  Pruning or removals will be advised based on the species of tree you own.

Dan is available to walk through your yard and evaluate each of your trees based on their value to your yard, their health, and their potential. Dan can help you make the best decisions on which trees need to be removed and how to preserve those trees you want to keep for the long term.
